FSA chief executive Catherine Brown to step down

Food Standards Agency (FSA) chief executive Catherine Brown has announced she is to step down from her current role. 

She will remain in the position until March 2017 to help recruit her successor.

In a statement, the FSA said: “We are pleased that Catherine will be with us until the end of March 2017 in her current role and will be making herself available to support a smooth transition to her successor when appointed.”

Brown took up the post in October 2012 and was previously chief executive of the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency.

Before that she had roles at Unilever, the NHS and Bupa, has well as holding non-executive board member positions at various charities.

Her departure was welcomed by the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS) which saw it as an opportunity for a new relationship between the FSA and food industry.

Norman Bagley, head of policy, said: “AIMS believes the departure of Catherine Brown as CEO is appropriate given the history of anti-industry sentiments that have concerned us for some time. We need at the helm of FSA a person with a knowledge of how the food industry works and the expertise to foster a much better working relationship between FSA and industry to the benefit of consumers and industry alike.”
