NI meat supplier goes ‘Light and Lean’ at Asda

Finnebrogue Artisan has launched a ‘Light & Lean’ range of sausages in Asda stores across the UK, which it estimates will represent £2m worth of business in the first year of sale.

The product retails at £2.75 and represents an addition to the supermarket chain’s 16-strong Extra Special sausage range, for which Finnebrogue have supplied sausages since April 2014.

The company, which is based in Downpatrick Northern Ireland, said the Light & Lean line was intended to offer a healthy, gluten free alternative for barbecues this summer.

Made from pork sourced from high-welfare farms across Northern Ireland the ‘Light & Lean’ sausages contain less than three percent fat, just 71 calories and are high in protein.

Paul Geary, Asda senior buying manager for meat, said: “We’re always keen to support Northern Ireland’s agri-food sector and help local food companies grow their business through Asda’s national channels.”

“We’re delighted that our partnership continues to flourish and that we are marking the third anniversary by extending the range to include this premium, healthy option which reflects the ever changing needs of our customers.”

Asda said it expected to sell more than seven million packs of own label premium sausages in the summer alone.

Finnebrogue refused to reveal if it had any plans to continue to extend Asda’s Extra Special range.
