Healthy sausage offer launched into Asda

Highland Game is hoping for healthy sales with the news another supermarket has signed up to offer its new diet-friendly sausage.

The Scottish Slimmers Wildly Healthy Venison Sausage goes into 24 Asda stores across Scotland from 15 March.

The retailer is joining other leading stores, including Tesco and Sainsbury’s in Scotland, to offer calorie-counting customers a sausage option.

Ingela Kassander Nissen, PR and marketing co-ordinator with Highland Game, said: “We wanted to develop a healthier sausage that would appeal to dieters, healthy eaters and the weight-conscious alike, but also to the family market where parents are fast becoming aware that their children’s health can be improved through a sensible diet.

“We are delighted to see that our Wildly Healthy Venison Sausages seem to have become the consumer’s family meal choice – we have found that our healthy sausages work as a family, child-friendly and extremely palatable introduction to venison, encouraging consumers to try the rest of our range. Our Wildly Healthy Sausage was initially launched in September 2009 and is already our number two best-selling retail product, the sales more than doubling in January 2010.”

Lorraine Queen, publishing and promotions manager at Scottish Slimmers, said: “The discerning taste buds of our members just love these fantastically tasty, meaty sausages and this is reflected in the dozens of comments, new recipes and serving ideas they are sharing with us – such as sausage stew, stir fry and even meatballs made from the sausage content without the skins! It’s amazing to think that two years ago 45% of members surveyed never bought any sausages at all, as they felt they would either be too high in calories and fats or found the existing low-fat varieties unsatisfactory. Now we’re all enjoying them in a sausage sandwich with ketchup, as bangers and mash, in our quick sausage casserole, with red wine gravy...and, astonishingly, only 55 calories per sausage – what a turnaround!”
