British Turkey awards open up for entries

Turkey bosses have announced the 14th annual British Turkey Awards are now open for entries. With 10 categories available, the event, organised by the British Turkey Federation (BTF), will give manufacturers a chance to showcase the way they are responding to ever-changing retailer demands and consumer needs.

Matthew Pullen, of the BTF’s marketing committee, said: “The awards are open for turkey producers and manufacturers, as well as chefs and consumers, to enter. We are looking for the best turkey products around – whether dressed whole birds for Christmas, convenient meal solutions or new innovations.”

A panel of independent judges from consumer and trade food media will test the products for taste, appearance, suitability for the end-consumer, packaging and POS support, including quality assurance marks. The Red Tractor logo, alongside the Quality British Turkey mark, is carried on many turkey packs, as well as the Union Flag to denote the origins. Only British turkey meat may be entered.

The judging panel will also include a member of the public, chosen in a national ballot. Said Pullen: “It is the consumer who chooses, buys and eats the products, so we believe it is right that a representative of these consumers should help judge the entries.”

Winners of the awards, will be announced at a black tie charity dinner and dance at Claridge’s Ballroom, London, on September 23.
