Bradwell Butchery battles council over road closure
Published:  06 September, 2010

A Norfolk based butcher is fighting council plans to close the road outside his shop for more than six weeks to carry out repairs to just 130m of pathway.

Andrew Edmonds, who runs Bradwell Butchery near Great Yarmouth, said the work would cause massive disruption for his business, restricting customer access, for an unacceptable period of time.

Andrew estimates the closure would lead to a cut in trade of 25% and could see him have to make reductions in his own staffing levels.

He is urging the council to keep one lane open on the road during the works to allow customers to access his business and other shops on the road.

He said for the work to take six weeks, the repair would have to be carried out at 1.6m a day, and he also questions the cost of the work: Ive been told it will cost 65,000 to carry out the works. That breaks down to 1,300 a day, at 1.6m a day. Im clearly in the wrong job!

The council has insisted the road closure is necessary, to ensure a safe working environment for those carrying out the repairs and added they would maintain access to affected businesses at all times.
