Deliciously Wild opens venison processing plant

Deliciously Wild, a new ethical company providing wild, free-range venison, has opened a state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Cumbria’s Eden Valley.

The company’s new Food Standards Agency ‘Approved Game Handling Establishment’ at Plumpton near Penrith, is said to be among the largest of its kind in the UK.

Investment in over 200m² of processing capacity is designed to enable Deliciously Wild to provide hotels, pubs, restaurants and retailers in the north west and online customers across the country with a year-round supply of wild venison.

The company’s wild venison comes from a network of vetted approved suppliers – sourced wherever possible within a 75-mile radius of the Penrith site – who are required to operate to the highest animal welfare, food hygiene and environmental standards.

All products are described as fully traceable and come from six deer species, which have different seasons at different times of the year.

Founder and managing director Dr Stuart McLanaghan said: “At Deliciously Wild we aim to provide a fully traceable source of wild, free-range venison on a year-round basis. We are delighted to be opening our new premises, enabling us to make use of custom-made equipment, so we can provide top-of-the-range products to our customers.”

Deliciously Wild has developed exacting standard operating procedures to guarantee the quality of its venison products, which include steaks, joints, mince, burgers and sausages.

The firm’s refrigerated collection vehicles have been specially modified to house a hanging rail system enabling chilled air circulation to keep the meat at optimum temperature and quality during delivery.

“Deliciously Wild wants to raise awareness of the environmental and nutritional benefits  of eating wild venison, as well as encouraging everyone to enjoy its succulent taste on a regular basis,” Dr McLanaghan added.
