Italian meat supplier visits Wales

A supplier to some of Italy’s leading restaurants has visited Wales as demand for premium quality Welsh Lamb continues to grow in Italy.

The visit, organised by the Welsh red meat promotion company Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC), was designed to give supplier Selecta a platform to tell Welsh meat processors about the exact requirements of Italian diners.

Guido Bruzzo, owner of Selecta, and chef Bruno Barbieri briefed them on the high-end restaurant sector in Italy and showed the type of cuts needed for easy portion management.

HCC’s market development executive Emma Jones said: “The visit came as a result of discussions we had with our agent in Italy, who identified the need for us to provide lamb cuts that are designed specifically to appeal to Italian taste buds.”

Italy is an important and growing market for Welsh Lamb. A total of 604t, worth £8.5m, was exported in 2009, compared with 391t worth £5.8m in 2008. Worldwide sales of Welsh lamb topped £109m in 2009, a year-on-year increase of 20%.

Export figures for 2010 will be available early next year.
