McWhinney’s sausages plan expansion in Canada

Sausage company McWhinney’s, from Bangor, Co Down, Northern Ireland, says it has scored a coup in getting products licensed for export to Canada.

It is not easy for food companies to break into the Canadian market, as import restrictions are extremely tight, especially for meat products, says McWhinney’s, a fifth-generation family business founded in 1898.

Kevin McWhinney said: “To the best of my knowledge McWhinney’s is the only company in Northern Ireland or Britain with a licence to sell pork products into Canada, which I think speaks for itself as to the quality of our pork sausages.”

McWhinney’s sausages are made in a traditional manner in small batches, using the principles of mince and bowl chop. The company also exports its 70% pork sausages to Spain, France and Turkey.

Kevin McWhinney added: “We are hoping to grow our overseas sales in the coming months and I am delighted there are so many satisfied customers in Canada.”
