Last chance for Britain's best Butchers

Butchers are being given an extra opportunity to be in with a chance of taking home the title of Britain's best shop.

Due to popular demand, Meat Trades Journal has extended the deadline of its Butcher's Shop of the Year Awards to 15 August.

Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, said: "I would urge all butchers to take advantage of the two-week extension and get their entries in to us. This is a great opportunity to have the high quality of your shop recognised and all your hard work rewarded."

These prestigious MTJ awards recognise excellence in the independent meat retail sector and give butchers the chance to shine on a national scale.

As well as the six regions - Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Midlands & East, North of England and South of England - the categories Farm Shop of The Year, Butcher's Plus and Innovation of the Year are featured again.

Last year's new category, Young Butcher of the Year, will be returning and aims to highlight and reward the skills of butchers aged 25 and under on August 1, 2008.

Bedington said: "This is a great category to go for and I would urge all butchers to encourage their apprentices and youngsters to enter."

All winners will be announced at a glittering lunch at a new venue this year, the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel in London, on 18 November.

This year's awards are being supported by EBLEX, Lucas Ingredients and Food to Go, Bizerba, Weddel Swift and Harmony Farm, the Scotch Butchers Club, the Meat Training Council, Danish Bacon & Meat Council, BPEX and Tican Chilled.
