Bitterling cuts abattoir ties

ENGINEERING FIRM Bitterling has severed its links with the abattoir world to focus on conveyor systems, automated handling solutions, catering equipment and oil filtration.

The 125-year-old Nottingham firm has sold all its abattoir-related stock and the rights to trade under the E A Bitterling name to French firm Materiels Charles Mecal. Bitterling managing director Roger Mackness said the deal was the result of a move taken seven years ago to apply the company's engineering expertise to bespoke conveyor systems. "Bitterling has a long history of producing quality, engineered equipment. I came to the company from the conveyor manufacturing industry and over the last seven years we have shifted that excellence and expertise to the design and manufacture of conveyor systems."

Bitterling recently completed a major fit-out of new production facilities at Grampian Foods. Materiels Charles Mecal will continue to manufacture abattoir equipment for eastern Europe under the E A Bitterling name from its St Etienne factory in the Rhones-Alpes region.
