Eblex appoints new board members

Eblex has appointed two new board members to help steer the organisation’s work for beef and sheep producers in England.

Industry veterans Richard Phelps and Colette Backwell took up their roles on April 1.

John Cross, EBLEX chairman, said: “Richard and Colette are two very strong appointments to the EBLEX board to bolster the expertise we have already. They both bring unique skill sets which give them a different take on the challenges we face as an industry and in helping to shape and oversee the strategic direction taken by EBLEX.

“I wish them both all the best and am looking forward to working more closely with them.”

Richard is the managing director of Southern Counties Fresh Foods and agriculture director for the RWM Food Group based in Somerset and Dorset. He is also on the board of Meat South West and sits on the AHDB forecasting forum. Richard also  developed the Blade Farming operation and is the managing director, overseeing calf rearing and beef finishing units throughout the UK.

Colette Backwell has more than 20 years’ experience in food, farming and rural affairs. She held a number of posts within Defra, including co-ordinator of the LINK Sustainable Livestock Production Programme, head of pig policy, and programme manager for the Sustainable Farming and Food Programme. In the Scottish Government, Colette led the team responsible for development of the evidence base to underpin food and rural affairs policy. She brings experience of animal disease prevention and control from time spent as head of the Scottish government’s Animal Health and Welfare Division.
