High tech help for steaks

Consumers are being given the opportunity to improve their steak and roast cooking skills, with a little help from the latest technology.

Quality Meat Scotland unveiled an innovative new cooking ‘app’ at the Royal Highland Show last week, aimed at helping consumers master the art of cooking the perfect roast or steak.

Among the first to download the new app at the show were celebrity cook Lady Claire Macdonald and Scotch Beef hunk Chris Capaldi

The smartphone app, which is suitable for use when cooking beef, pork or lamb, is initially available on the iPhone, while an Android version will be available in the next few weeks.

Featuring easy-to-follow instructions, mouth-watering recipes, tips and shortcuts and a simple-to-use touch test, the app also features a timer and alert function preparation advice, such as how to choose the perfect cut and the importance of removing meat from the chill to stand for a short period before cooking.

Suzie Carlaw, Quality Meat Scotland marketing manager, said the new app had taken three months to develop and will be a useful aid for cooks of ages and skill levels.

“What we are aiming to do is bring tradition and innovation together, so the latest technology can help consumers get the best from our wonderful, traditionally produced beef, lamb and pork.

“By using this simple-to-use app, cooks of all levels of ability should be able to get maximum enjoyment from eating steaks and roasts.”
