MPs back Yorkshire sausage campaign

Six MPs have given their backing to a campaign by Ilkley butcher David Lishman to get a Yorkshire sausage.

Kris Hopkins MP for Keighley, Jason McCartney MP for Colne Valley, Craig Whittaker MP for Calder Valley, Robert Goodwill MP for Scarborough and Whitby, Stuart Andrew MP for Pudsey and Nigel Adams MP for Selby and Ainsty got stuck into some Yorkshire Sausage sampling at Westminster earlier this week.

They also cast their vote as to which of Lishman’s six specially designed bangers they think should be crowned Yorkshire’s official sausage.

Kris Hopkins, MP for Ilkley and Keighley, said: “There is no doubt that the best sausages are already made in Yorkshire, but we play second fiddle to no-one and if other counties have an official sausage of their own, then so should we!

“I am particularly proud that the Yorkshire Sausage is being developed in Ilkley and David deserves tremendous credit for his efforts over the past few weeks and months.  Roll on Yorkshire Day when the winning sausage is revealed.”

Since launching on 30 April at the Dales Festival of Food and Drink in Leyburn, nearly 3,000 sausage samplers have cast their votes at Scarborough, Dalby Forest, York, Bramham International Horse Trials, Ilkley town centre and Leeds.

Twice Champion of Champions winner Lishman added:  “It was fantastic to get the support of some of our region’s MPs today. As figure heads for our region, their involvement and vital votes are greatly appreciated and valued.

“Over the last nine weeks, our Yorkshire Sausage campaign has received enormous support from thousands of sausage fans across the region and we’re looking forward to revealing the results and our region’s official banger on 1 August.”
