Samworth Charity Challenge raises £250,000

The Samworth Brothers’ group of companies has raised more than £250,000 for charity in its Samworth Charity Challenge 2011.

Competitors, group customers and suppliers all took part in the event – a demanding one-day multisport team adventure race, which combined mountain biking, trail running, coasteering, kayaking and navigation.

Brian Stein, group chief executive, said: “Everyone involved entered into the spirit of the event. The event was a logistical challenge and all involved deserve much credit for a very successful Charity Challenge.

“ All the teams rose to the Challenge, while our chefs really worked hard all day preparing and serving breakfast and dinner in the evening; they worked just as hard as the competitors. To raise so much money for charity was a magnificent effort. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported the teams and helped them to collect so much.”

As in previous Challenges, there were two entry levels: Tough, a minimum distance a 10km walk, 30km bike-ride, and 3km kayak; or Super Tough – a minimum distance of 15km walk, 45km bike-ride, and 5km kayak.

It was the third Challenge organised by Samworth Brothers – the previous ones were staged in 2007 and 2009 – and brought the total raised for good causes by the events to just short of £900,000. Every team competing had to pay an entry fee of £1,200 and commit to raising as much money for their chosen charities as possible.

The family business produces a wide variety of fresh, chilled foods of the highest quality, ranging from sandwiches and pasties, to ready meals and puddings, carefully made for the multiple retailers and its own brands, including Ginster’s.
