Vion loses Sainsbury’s chicken contract

Vion Food Group has lost a contract with Sainsbury’s following the restructuring of the supermarket’s chicken products in an end-to-end review of its poultry supply chain.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “As part of our 2020 sustainability plan, our goal is to ensure we can continue to provide the highest-quality produce at the best possible value for our customers while at the same time supporting British farming and agriculture. We are committed to doubling the amount of British food we sell by 2020 as part of that sustainability plan.
“As a consequence of the sustainability planning process, we will consolidate our supply base for all chicken products into two suppliers, namely, 2 Sisters Food Group and Moy Park.
“Vion Food Group will no longer supply chicken products to Sainsbury’s with effect from February 2013. We are currently working with the supply chain, both new and old, to ensure that we continue to meet customer demand while we transition to the new suppliers.

A Vion spokesman said: "While this news is disappointing, we will continue working with Sainsbury’s until February 2013 as the business is transferred to their new supply base. Sainsbury’s will continue to be a major client for the wider Vion UK business.

"Vion remains fully committed to maintaining a leading position in the UK poultry category."
