Hunt on for UK’s best butchers 2012

Butchers are still in with a chance of being named 2012 Butcher’s Shop of the Year, but only if they get their entries in before 3 August.

The event, organised by Meat Trades Journal, aims to celebrate everything that is great about the UK’s independent retail butchery trade, seeking out the best of the best across the country.

Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, said: “These awards are always extremely popular and are a great showcase for some of the superb work that is going on out there. For those taking part, the benefits are fantastic. Simply entering the awards can be beneficial, giving you chance to pause, take a good look at your business and assess your operation. Getting through to the finals is also a great PR story to tell your customers and pick up new businesses.”

The competition covers butchers’ shops up and down the country, with the winner in each region going head to head to reveal the ultimate best shop in the UK. Other national awards include Farmshop of the Year, Butcher’s Plus, which looks at larger operations, Halal Butcher’s Shop of the Year, and the ever-popular Young Butcher of the Year award.

Last year’s competition saw Davidsons Specialist Butchers from Inverurie, take the title. At the time, owner John Davidson said: “It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I’ve wanted this since before I even had a butcher’s shop. Being named best butcher in the UK is a great marketing tool.”

The competition is sponsored by Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales, Eblex, Bpex, Weddel Swift & Harmony Farm, Lucas Ingredients, Verstegen Sauces & Spices, Tican Chilled, the Meat Training Council and Quality Meat Scotland’s Scotch Butchers’ Club.

Entry forms are included in the July issue of MTJ Extra, and are available to download from www.meatinfo.co.uk. Entry deadline for the competition is 3 August, while the awards lunch will be held on 22 November at the five-star London Landmark Hotel.
