Welfare awards launched

Animal welfare campaigners are calling on food manufacturers, retailers and the foodservice sector to demonstrate their commitment to the cause by entering the Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards.

The 2012 awards, organised by Compassion in World Farming, are open to companies across Europe, with the winners being announced at a ceremony on 27 September at the Honourable Artillery Company, hosted by cook and broadcaster Valentine Warner.

Launched in 2007, the Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards recognise companies that are committed to implementing substantial policy changes that result in positive impacts for farm animals.

The Awards comprise the Good Egg Award, the Good Chicken Award, the Good Dairy Award and, new for 2012, the Good Pig Award, which encourages higher welfare systems for both sows and meat pigs. Compassion is accepting entries in all categories for one more week only and the deadline for submissions is Monday 6 August.

Also new for 2012 is a category specifically aimed at UK retailers – Leadership and Innovation in Retail.  This category is an opportunity for retailers to showcase best-practice initiatives that fall outside the existing awards categories, but still represent tangible benefits for farm animals.
