SFDF comments on food engineering degree

The Scottish Food and Drink Federation (SFDF) has commented on findings about an increased interest in food engineering jobs.

According to findings released in the Recruitment and Employment Confederation’s (REC) ‘Report on Jobs’, recruiters have seen a rise on demand for permanent staff engineering roles. FDF director of communications Terry Jones said: “The findings of this latest report on the UK jobs market echo what we know about the food and drink manufacturing sector where there is significant demand for engineering skills.”

Jones also explained that he anticipated a future in which more engineers would be needed in the food sector to meet growing demand for British food and drink, “especially in overseas markets.”

In light of the expected rise in demand the SFDF is working across the industry to “create a steady flow of skilled graduates.” SFDF also said it had recently announced, in partnership with the National Skills Academy for Food and Drink, the UK’s first food and drink engineering degree. The degree, which will be offered by Sheffield Hallam University, has also received a co-investment from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills through the employer investment fund and should be available in 2014.
