Dalehead Foods opened its newly refurbished multi-million pound abattoir and production facility at a ceremony attended by Bpex and East Midlands Pork Producers (EMPP).

The newly refurbished Spalding facility, part funded by Defra, the EU and in partnership with East Midlands Pork Producers, marks the completion of 18 months of work.

Described as a “world class” facility, the site now features an amenities building for staff, upgraded changing areas, a high-tech lorry wash, a state-of-the-art carcass grading system and a new 500 sq metre chill extension.

Managing director of Dalehead Foods Seamus Rooney stated: “The upgrade should also enable us to secure US Department of Agriculture approval, which in the long run could boost pork exports to the US and ultimately improve the economic outlook for British pig farmers.”

He continued: “The refurbishment of our Spalding facility reaffirms Dalehead Foods’ commitment to invest in the British Pork industry.”

Minister of State for Agriculture and Food David Heath said the new project is a step in the right direction for creating jobs and economic growth for rural areas.

Heath said: “Defra has invested £2.4million in this innovative project, which will really help to boost the economy and promote British pork on a global stage.”

James White from the EMPP declared the facilities officially opened, with representatives from Defra, Dalehead Foods and Waitrose.
