Brian Turner joins butchers to compete against supermarkets

In a strong attempt to compete against supermarkets, chef and TV personality Brian Turner has officially opened a brand new concept butcher’s shop in Leeds today.

Wilsons of Crossgates has undergone an innovative refurbishment in a bid to step up competition against supermarket retailers.

John and Andrew Green of Wilsons of Crossgates, fifth-generation butchers, decided to take a new direction to compete in today’s fast-paced environment. John commented: “It’s a really challenging time for butchers, many are struggling to compete and have to look at new ways to attract customers.”

He continued: “What we have done is taken the layout and shopping experience you would expect from a supermarket and applied it to a top-quality butcher’s shop. We’ve developed a food shopping experience with the ease of a modern layout and the added knowledge that the produce has been handmade by master butchers using traceable meat and offering excellent value too.”

Saving the high street butchers is becoming an increasingly relevant issue, which is why butchers’ supplier John Penny & Sons started its Meat Crusade campaign to save the British high street butchers.

In the mid-1980s, there were 22,000 and in 2010 there were merely 6,553 left, according to the editor of Meat Trades Journal Ed Bedington. According to John Penny of John Penny & Sons, the decline started as a result of the domination of faceless one stop shops.

John Penny said; “Wilsons of Crossgates is an example of butchers fighting back. Whilst still very much a butcher’s shop, Wilsons now offers the shopping experience that fulfils consumers’ modern-day needs and creates an alternative to the supermarkets. We believe more butchers will need to think tactically if they want to ride out the storm.

“The British butcher is a national treasure, part of our heritage, and something to be saved for future generations. Not only are credible butchers one of few remaining honest sources of quality, traceable  meat, they are vital to supporting our farming industry through careful sourcing and paying fair prices to farmers who are equally struggling to make ends meet,” he added.
