Royalty attends Meat Training Council event

The Meat Training Council’s (MTC) annual prize-giving in the Butchers’ Hall in London was attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne

Youngsters in their first year in the industry were rewarded for achievement in learning, and professionals received fellowships from the Institute of Meat for lifetime contribution to the industry.

The Princess Royal presented the awards by congratulating the winners and speaking to them about their experiences.

The event, which recognises and rewards excellence in learning in the meat industry, was also attended by representatives from throughout the meat industry, executives from Dunbia and Faccenda and owners of small retail butchers and editors of leading meat publications.

The winners of Best Student awards included Ben McTaggart for Food Industry Skills, Craig Cutler for Retail Butchery, Timothy Bullet for Poultry Industry, Harriet Clutsom for Meat Industry, and Joshua Brown for Best Meat Apprentice.

Michael Currie won the prize for Management Award, Wayne Clark for Driving Food Manufacture Excellence, Craig Stevens for Outstanding Meat Learner of the Year, James Barker for Best Food Apprentice and Kyle Mottram for Outstanding Food Learner of the Year.

Additionally, Walter Smith Fine Foods won Best Company Training Scheme, and the Lord Graham Endeavour Award went to Benjamin Peel.

Meat Training Council chief executive Bill Jermey, said: “We are delighted to see such a fantastic and high-profile turnout. I would personally like to thank everyone who attended today. It is wonderful to see so many fresh-faced young people – the future of our industry – standing shoulder to shoulder with our most experienced professionals, particularly in such an historic venue. Evidence, if evidence is needed, that there is real life in the meat industry and true pride in the specialist skills and knowledge which we collectively hold. There is a real buzz in the room today; it is a very positive event in the meat industry calendar,” he added.
