North East butcher to offer Luing beef

Multi-award-winning north east butcher George Payne, who is renowned for selling meat from lesser-known breeds, will supply a specialist breed of beef for the first time.

The Newcastle-based butcher, who is also a long-standing member of the Q Guild, will be stocking a variety of beef cuts and products derived from the Scottish-bred Luing cattle in his Gosforth shop. Luing cattle first evolved on the island of Luing in Argyll in 1947 and combines the Beef Shorthorn with the Highlander.  

Payne will buy the beef, first recognised by the British Government as a breed in its own right in 1965, from Millers of Speyside. Not only is the beef said to be thriving across the UK and Ireland, but Europe, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South America are also purveyors of the breed.

“We are always looking to provide something different, notably meat that cannot be bought in supermarkets. Our customers really appreciate this philosophy and often comment on the quality and superb flavour of these traditional and native cattle breeds,” Payne said.
