Butchers’ and Bakers’ Fair draws closer

With a strong and growing range of exhibitors, competitions and presentations, the autumn Butchers’ and Bakers’ Fair is gearing up to be a smash.

Taking place once again in Harrogate on Sunday 27 October, the fair will see some of the butchery and bakery sectors’ leading businesses exhibiting alongside prestigious events such as the long-running and stand-out sausage competition Champion of Champions and the National Pie Competition, sponsored by Brooks, which will see butchers and bakers going head to head to take home the titles.

A range of speakers is also being lined up to provide some thought-provoking and stimulating presentations live on stage throughout the day.

Exhibitors for butchers so far include Bizerba UK, Acrivarn, The Dalesman Group, Promens Packaging, Scobie and Junor Group, Interbake, Abpac, Lucas Ingredients, CATRA, A-Cold Distributors, Eblex, Chapman’s Seafoods and McDonnells.

Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, which organises the fair, said: “We’re returning to Harrogate after the success of the event last year. It’s a great venue and it gets a great turnout. There will be plenty to do and see and the stand-out competitions will make sure this is an event not to be missed.

“The independent trade faces its fair share of challenges, and events like this can provide a great platform to give your business a boost. I look forward to seeing you all in Yorkshire.”

Champions of champions

A stand-out event at the Fair will be the prestigious sausage competition, Champion of Champions.

This long-running contest pitches the best sausages from across the UK in a head-to-head battle to decide the country’s ultimate sausage. Sponsored by Bpex and Lucas Ingredients, Champion of Champions will see some of the UK’s best sausage producers travel to Yorkshire in a bid to claim the coveted title.

Bedington said: “This event is one of the most prestigious for any sausage-maker – this is the one to win. Previous winners have benefited hugely, not just from the kudos of being the best among your peers, but also from marketing their success to their customer base. It’s a great claim to be the maker of the UK’s best sausage.”

Last year’s competition saw master sausage-maker Allan Bennett of Wolverhampton take home the title for an unprecendented third time.

Bedington added: “Allan has set the bench very high for all butchers, but I’m sure others will be keen to eclipse his record and there will be some amazing sausages making their way to Harrogate this autumn.”
