Celebrity chef to open Colwyn Bay restaurant

One celebrity chef is giving food suppliers in the Welsh town of Colwyn Bay reason to celebrate, following the announcement of a new restaurant there.

Bryn Williams will open his eatery in Porth Eirias, Colwyn Bay, where businesses have already seen an uptick since the launch of a new dry beach – reporting their busiest summer yet.

“The recent news of Bryn Williams’ restaurant opening has contributed to high spirits in the town, with local businesses positive that this is another step in the right direction for the continued growth of Colwyn Bay,” a spokesperson said.

The chef has planned to commit to local suppliers for his new restaurant, which has been well-received by local food producers. “As a local business we think the opening of Bryn’s restaurant will be a great boost to Colwyn Bay and will add extra credibility to the town as a destination for food lovers,” said Mona Jones of Dolwen Farm shop.

Local butcher John Mitchell, of Mitchell’s Butchers, said the opening was great news and any increase in people coming to Colwyn Bay would be beneficial to local businesses. “Bryn is a strong advocate of the wonderful produce of North Wales and the new restaurant will be a chance to showcase some of the amazing food that comes from the area.”

“Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef are reared from quality breeding and grazed on rich pasture land in the Conwy Valley and North Wales, therefore producing the best carcases of quality meat,” he added.

Meanwhile, managing director of Bodant Welsh Food Centre Chris Morton said Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef were recognised worldwide and by the European Commission, which bestowed Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status on the red meat, “for their superior taste and quality”.

Morton said he hoped Williams’ choice to source locally would prompt others to follow suit, “whether in restaurants or at home”.

He said: “Food tourism is growing in importance, a factor noted by the Welsh Assembly Government. North Wales needs to develop a reputation for quality food and the new Bryn Williams restaurant can only help in this regard.”
