App informs consumers of meat provenance
Published:  17 October, 2013

A mobile app launched this year aims to tackle questions of provenance by providing consumers with easy access to trace each meat product through the supply chain.

‘Where’s This From?’ has been designed to give users free access to data published by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), which gives background information on meat products sold in supermarkets.

It translates the four-digit code in the EU Identification Mark on the back of meat packs and gives users information on the food operator that handled the meat, including name, location, activities and level of FSA compliance regarding hygiene and animal welfare.

In a statement, the company said: “We believe our app is a fantastic example of how open data can help consumers and create economic and social value. We also believe this is just the start – there is much more data held within public authorities which we are bringing into the app to cover a wider amount of food groups and features.”

The app launched at the end of April this year and has attracted 1,300 users.
