Walter Smith leads the way with four golds

A host of prestigious meat awards were won by two branches of Midlands butchers Walter Smith at the Guild of Q Butchers 2005 Smithfield Awards Product Evaluation.

Walter Smith Lichfield branch, based in Staffordshire, went home clutching four gold awards, the Supreme Award for best product and the EBLEX award for 'best product' - Longboat of Lamb - made from English beef or lamb.

It also won the Dalziel Award for kitchen-ready products and a Guild Diamond Award for the best entry in that category.

The Lichfield branch also scooped a Diamond Award for its short back bacon.

Walter Smith Knowle branch in Solihull won an overall Diamond Award for its traditional beef burger, and an EBLEX Award for best in category.

More than 70 meat industry representatives attended the awards lunch and presentation. Special guest was TV chef Nick Nairn.

Mr Nairn famous, for appearances on cooking programmes such as Ready Steady Cook, presented the awards at Butchers Hall in London.

More than 300 entries from Q Butchers all over Britain were judged in the awards which were sponsored by EBLEX and food chain supplier Dalziel.

Products were assessed at the Meat Technology Department at Thomas Danby College Leeds.

Philip Cranston, Chairman of Guild of Q Butchers said: "I am delighted to see Walter Smith do so well. The strength of the products has obviously shone through."
