Angus Beef Farmer Produces Best Scotch Steak

A small-scale Angus Beef farmer has beaten Scotland's best beef finishers to win the annual McIntosh Donald/Tesco Scotch Steak competition at the Royal Highland Show.

Jim Mitchell, who finishes only 55 cattle a year on his 150-acre farm of Woodside, Aberlemno, Forfar, was named winner at a presentation ceremony on the Tesco stand.

He was presented with the championship trophy and a cheque for £1,000 by Scotland's Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Richard Lochead.

"It is unbelievable," said Jim. "We always knew we had a good steer but we never thought we would come out top."

The winning steak came from a 27 month old Belgian Blue cross steer finished on a diet of ad lib silage, home-grown barley, maize gluton and distillers' dark grains. It was bred by Robert and Mamie Peterson from Upper Auchenlay, Dunblane and purchased at Perth mart as a yearling last year.

The chairman of the judging panel, celebrity chef Colin Capon, said the final 12 steaks were "very, very good" and Tesco meat buyer Matt Hood said selecting a winner had proved extremely difficult.

"The quality of all the steaks was quite phenomenal for both texture and flavour," said Hood. "The Scotch brand is driving beef sales forward in Tesco stores and is one of Tesco's strongest brands."
