Mid-west gold

Butchers in the mid-west have been celebrating after winning 77 gold awards from the British Pig Executive BPEX's second product evaluation event of the season.

In total, 27 butchers from the region entered 220 products into the event, which was held at Malvern Three Counties Showground in Worcestershire on 11 October.

Pauline Phipps from R. A. Phipps in Worcestershire was crowned Regional Champion with her pork, chicken and apple pie. But she didn't stop at that and was also named Supreme Sausage Champion for her traditional pork sausage.

Third generation butcher Pauline was delighted. "We've not been at the roadshows for a while so it's great to get such recognition on our return. To be awarded Regional Champion for our pie too was really special. It is thanks to our great team of people though who help make a difference and the time we spend on our products really counts. I look forward to coming back and beating our eight gold awards next time!"

Teme Vale Victuallars, also based in Worcestershire, celebrated their two champion titles. Chrys Titshall became Speciality Pork Sausage Champion with his pork and spicy tomato sausage and James Mealings's dish of traditional faggots with parsnip and rosemary mash achieved top spot in the Ready Meal category.

Chrys said: "It's a great honour to receive not just one but two category champion titles so we're extremely pleased. We take great pride in our reputation; providing the very best sausages and meats and use only top quality ingredients. These events are a good opportunity to make sure we continue to create products of the highest standard and of course, it is always wonderful to be able to shout about our achievements afterwards."

BPEX butchery and product development manager, Keith Fisher, said: "The feedback from the judges is that the standards are increasing so this year we raised the number of points needed for sold, silver and bronze to keep people improving. Our congratulations go to all the butchers who entered products for evaluation, the majority of whom achieved a gold award. This really does reflect the quality of entries received on the day."
