D2 uses heat for dome-style sealing

D2 Food Systems presented an innovative heat-sealing solution for new dome-style packs, which it is marketing in conjunction with Centrally Packaged Meats, its first customer.

The revolutionary Ulma Scorpius 600 tray-sealing system comes complete with innovative modified atmosphere (MAP) dome lid sealing facility. The advanced machine has been specially developed for high-quality heat sealing of sister company D2 Europack's foil and film dome-style contai-ners - designed for a wide range of convenience food products, including ready-to-cook whole poultry or joints of meat.

The tray-sealing system operates at speeds up to 60 packs per minute, and offers the option of MAP for extended shelf-life. The compact machine provides a strong peelable seal, making the packs easy to open as well as preventing spillage and ensuring product integrity when in transit and on-shelf. The fully washdown ULMA Scorpius 600 offers fast size changeover, touchscreen controls, smart belt in-feed for collating and centering of trays, plus top-mounted servo drives for speed control.

Dave Edwards, managing director of D2 Food Systems says: "We used our unrivalled experience in the design and manufacture of packaging and processing systems for the convenience food industry, to work with ULMA Packaging in developing the new Scorpius tray sealer with dome lid sealing facility."

D2 Europack's attractive dome-style containers comprise its Smoothpack© smoothwall aluminium foil trays and new Smoothdome© heat-sealable, dome-shaped lids. Thermoformed from APET, the transparent, high-clarity lids offer significant presentation, cooking and environmental benefits, says the firm. They are recyclable, while the special dome design reduces the tray height but increases the overall pack height by up to 80mm for maximum brand and on-shelf impact.

In addition, because the product sits well above the rim of the tray, consumers can clearly see what they are buying. The dome-style packs are available in a range of sizes and styles, and suitable for oven and microwave cooking; in fact, the oven-cooking process is enhanced as convectional heat can circulate to the sides of the product.
