M&S Road to Recovery

Marks & Spencer appears to be on the road to recovery the retail chain's boss Stuart Rose acknowledged today, attributing the good news to the high volume of pre-Christmas sales.

The M&S chief executive said like-for-like sales - which ignore sales at new stores - in the October to December period were up 5.6% on the same period a year ago.

Food sales have increased at the store with figures up by 3.6% on the same period a year ago.

A spokesman for the retail chain said the well-received advertising campaign was partly responsible for the increase in the demand for M&S food.

Rose said: "We have now delivered growth on growth in all areas of our business, thus completing the first part of our recovery plan."
