Turkey awards start hotting up

Crispy pastry-topped turkey pies, stuffed turkey olives and smoked turkey drumsticks are among the new products shortlisted for the British Turkey Awards 2009.

Organised by the British Turkey Federation (BTF), the independent panel of judges tasted their way through nine whole roast turkeys before choosing three finalists for the Best Christmas Traditional trophy. They will now taste another 18 shortlisted turkey products before choosing the winners of categories including Best Barbecue and Best Innovation, plus scrutinise the packaging, value for money and serving suggestions of another 92 entrants.

Catriona Lee, BTF marketing committee chairperson, said: “This is the 13th year of our awards and they have grown and evolved each year. We are constantly updating the categories to reflect the way retailers are improving and developing their turkey fixtures. This year we have a new Best Meal Solution category, to reflect how more people are eating at home rather than going out during the credit crunch.”

Other shortlisted entries include kebabs, sausages and flavoured steaks aimed at the BBQ sector, as well as a ready-to-roast stuffed breast from Cranberry Foods and ever-popular Turkey Drummers from Bernard Matthews.

Winners of each category, plus British Turkey Butcher, Recipe Writer and Chef of the Year, and the top accolade of Retailer of the Year, will be announced at a gala dinner on 24 September at Claridges.
