Yorkshire butchers' competition comes of age

Yorkshire butchers are being urged to champion their wares and help celebrate a competition’s landmark anniversary.

The 21st Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage, Black Pudding & Beefburger Competition is calling for entries and hopes for a record turnout this year.

Organised by the Confederation of Yorkshire Butchers Councils, the contest is at Cedar Court Hotel, Bradford, on Sunday 19 October but entries must be in by 11 October. Late entries can be submitted up to 10.30am on the day of the competition for an extra cost.

Confederation committee man, Keighley butcher Mike Ward, said: “The Great Yorkshire remains the biggest and most prestigious regional meat trades competition in the UK and we are hoping for a record entry to mark our landmark 21st anniversary. To win one of the top awards is a real honour and past victors have experienced a massive surge in demand for their award-winning products.”

The competition is also open to farm shops and bakers who make products on their own premises.
Supreme and reserve supreme champions will be chosen in the pie and sausage-making sections, with championship honours also up for grabs in the black pudding and beefburger classes.

Individual trophies and diplomas will be handed to all championship, first, second and third placed class winners across the eight-strong line-up of awards categories.
