Carcase classification under consultation

The meat industry is being encouraged by Defra to take part in a consultation on the implementation of European legislation concerning the classification of carcases.

The government department are looking for contributions from the industry on the on the enforcement of Community scales for the classification of beef, pig and sheep carcases and the reporting of prices which came into effect from 1 January 2009.

The UK must now adopt appropriate domestic implementing measures to enforce the provisions for which Defra is seeking views on the proposals contained in ‘The Beef and Pig Carcase Classification (England) Regulations 2009’ which will incorporate the enforcement powers for the new carcase classification legislation.

The impact on the livestock sector of the proposed Regulations is said to be small with those affected being operators of approved slaughterhouses killing adult bovine animals and pigs, classifiers of bovine animals and pigs, and beef and pig farmers.

Comments are invited on the proposals where responses should be received by 13 November 2009.
