Major Suffolk abattoir plans unveiled

Suffolk meat company C&K Group has unveiled plans to build a multi-species plant, serving the East Anglia region, in a project backed by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA).

As part of its second phase of investment at its Lamberts abattoir near Eye, C&K has been given £1.4m by the EEDA through the Rural Development Programme for England. It is hoped that capacity in revenue terms will be increased by over £30m and 35 more jobs will be created over the next three years.

C&K Group joint owner Kevin Burrows said: “This represents the fulfilment of a dream to us as a family business, as we have a fantastic team who really care about the quality of their work and the future of the meat sector.”

The existing plant was built in 1962 and has been working at capacity for several years, as planning was established for the new development of 40,000 sq ft at the premises. Several environmental features will also be included in the new development, such as rainwater harvesting, voltage optimisation and the latest broiler technology to minimise the environmental impact.

Chris Knock, EEDA rural development manager, added; “This initiative will bring producers together, working collectively with both the abattoir and butchers at Lamberts to deliver the fantastic quality meat we produce in the region.

“Protecting this sector is fundamental to this region, both directly through employment and indirectly by providing the grazed landscape that protects river valley habitats and is an essential visual element to attract tourists and visitors.”
