Pig producers encouraged to prevent disease spread
Published:  29 January, 2014

UK pig producers have been urged to review their biosecurity to protect herds against diseases such as African Swine Fever (ASF) and Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (DEP) virus due to their recent spread.

Bpex explained ASF has been confirmed in wild boar in Lithuania and was a particular risk to the UK because there was a large number of pig farm workers who travelled between these countries.

The PED virus has spread from the US to Canada, and prevention of these diseases was crucial, it added.

According to Bpex, producers should isolate pigs on arrival to the unit, limit access to vehicles and people, thoroughly clean and disinfect livestock lorries, and arrange an offsite collection point for deadstock collection vehicles.

Bpex is also encouraging producers to order free posters of ‘Don’t bring it home’ by emailing pighealth@bpex.ahdb.org.uk.
