Pasty champion keeps it in the family

Twelve-year-old Simon Cornish became the third member of his family to be crowned a champion at the Eden Project’s World Pasty Championships.

The competition, which took place on 2 March, is now in its third year. Father Graham won both the Cornish and Open Savoury professional categories in 2012, and brother Henry won the Open Savoury Junior category last year. Simon, from Launceston in Cornwall, continued the tradition this year by winning the Junior category.

Simon said: “It feels quite special to win this trophy after my dad and brother also won them. I practised making pasties more for this year’s competition and it paid off.”

The contest, known as the Olympics of Oggy, celebrates the famous Cornish export ahead of St Pirian’s Day on 5 March, and is supported by the Cornish Pasty Association.

Also victorious was Terry O’Connor, originally from Mullion, Cornwall, who now lives in Watford. He won the Cornish Pasty Amateur category, having won the Open Savoury Amateur category at last year’s championships. Terry stayed in Cornwall the day before the competition and baked his pasties there to ensure he was able to enter.

He said: “It feels fantastic to be the Cornish Pasty Amateur champion, I’ve been making pasties for years and this is great. This is the category I wanted to win, definitely. I’ll be back every year to defend my title.”
