Butchers urged to get involved in apprenticeship plans

The Food and Drink Training and Education Council (FTC) and industry employers have asked butchers to get involved in the final stages of introducing a new butchery apprenticeship.

Employers supporting the new apprenticeship include Morrisons, Faccenda, Fairfax Meadow and Aubrey Allen. Mickey Greenhalgh, head of Craft Academy at Morrisons, said: “We have long been committed to developing our young talent, equipping them with the skills, knowledge and attitude to become highly skilled butchers who can provide a quality service to our customers. As part of this, we are keen to help the industry to ensure all new butchers have the opportunity to meet their potential and progress successfully in their careers.”

The new butchery standards which, according to the FTC, “will outline what employers need from their butchery employees of tomorrow, in terms of skills, knowledge and behaviours”, will be announced in June after a consultation with businesses and butchers set to take place in mid-May.

“I urge businesses to get involved in the consultation to guarantee that it meets the needs of our industry now and in the future,” said Andrew Brodie, HR director, Faccenda.

Keith Fisher chief executive of the Institute of Meat, explained how the apprenticeship will benefit young butchers and employers: “By getting involved in the development and origination of this standard, we want to ensure that butchery becomes more and more popular as a distinct career choice for young people.

“Young apprentices bring significant levels of enthusiasm, commitment and talent with them and we look forward to finalising and launching this new standard in the summer to ensure that benefits are maximised for both business and learner.”
