A Somerset butcher with a “true talent” has won Dalziel’s 2014 Young Butchers Creative Meat Display Competition.

Champion Sam King, 25, is a butchery manager at Q Guild butcher’s Jon Thorner’s, based near Shepton Mallet in Somerset. He impressed with his “overall themed display and butchery flair”.

Retail butchery systems and machinery supplier Dalziel’s competition was hosted at the company’s headquarters in Newbury, attracting competitors from around the country and demonstrating young talent in the butchery trade.

Jon Thorner’s managing director and founder Jon Thorner said: “I am very proud of Sam and his achievement. The whole concept was his own and showed he has a true talent for butchery.”

All competitors were given the same selection of meat, spices and herbs, and were asked to create a display in two hours. The competition judges were Keith Fisher from Bpex, Roger Kelsey from the National Federation of Meat Traders, Jane Dale from MEAT (Ipswich) and Billy Owton from Owton Wholesale Butchers, and the prize was a specialist butchery knife set and a £100 voucher.

Dalziel’s Danny Upson said: “We were very proud of our young butchers, they showed a high level of professionalism and excellent butchery skills. The overall displays were very impressive and inspired many butchers who watched in anticipation for the young butchers to complete their task.”
