Scotch Bonnet Burger takes QMS prize

Falkirk schoolchild Eve Cattanach’s aptly named Scotch Bonnet Burger has been awarded the top prize in Quality Meat Scotland’s (QMS) Commonwealth Burger Challenge.

The contest invited kids from Scottish schools to enter burgers which incorporated a Commonwealth twist, and Eve’s burger was the pick of the shortlisted finalists. Her patty was made up of lean Scotch Beef mince, Scottish free range egg, Scottish cheddar cheese, porridge oats, mustard, garlic and Scotch Bonnet chilli.  

BBC’s The Voice contestant and British Judo Champion Max Murphy announced the overall winner at the Royal Highland Show last week, and sang an acoustic set of three songs on the QMS stand for the winners. He said: “The standard of all three finalists’ entries was extremely high, but Eve’s entry really stood out. It looked fantastic, tasted superb and was packed with quality Scottish ingredients.”

Eve, a 12-year-old pupil from St Mungo’s High School in Falkirk, will now see her burger sold in Scotch Butchers Club member shops around the country in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games. Furthermore, her school will receive a £250 voucher to spend on PGI Scotch Beef and Lamb and specially selected pork.

Schools worked with their local Scotch Butchers Club butcher to perfect the contestants’ recipes, and Eve was helped by Rod Gillie from Thomas Johnston in Falkirk. She fought off tough competition from fellow finalists Hannah Riddell from Dornoch Academy in Sutherland and Cameron Tweedie, Cameron McGlade and Haydn Evans from Cedarbank School in Livingston.

Jennifer Robertson, health and education coordinator at QMS, said: “The competition provided a fun and entertaining opportunity to raise awareness of healthy eating and encourage the pupils to take a more active role in the kitchen, learning how to prepare and cook meat from scratch. The assistance of our partner Scotch Butchers Club butchers was invaluable and they worked with the pupils to develop their recipes and think about what makes a product popular with customers.

“The final was very exciting and all the entrants demonstrated a high level of creativity when producing their burgers. I don’t know how the judges could pick. We hope that the finalists will continue to get involved in cooking – they certainly have a talent for it.”
