Fitness site offers zebra steaks

A UK fitness food website has added Zebra steaks to its line-up of exotic meats as they contain one-tenth of the fat found in beef, according to MuscleFood.com.

The website is offering two 5oz “zebra haunch steaks” for £6, They are being marketed as “premium steaks” that are “sweeter than beef but still have a subtle game flavour”. The website has already reported high demand for the steaks, which follows the success of its horsemeat range last year.

The cuts are from the hindquarter of the Burchell’s zebra breed in South Africa. The Burchell’s are the only breed allowed to be farmed for meat.

Darren Beale, from MuscleFood.com, said: “These zebra steaks offer a real taste of the Serengeti and, if they’re good enough for lions to feast on, then why not us humans too?
“Our customers are very health-conscious and are open to trying new foods as long as they are high in protein and low in fat.
“The success of our horsemeat range has proven that our customers are adventurous when it comes to trying new things, so we decided to introduce the ultimate low-fat high-protein meat – zebra.
“And it’s not just MuscleFood customers who are open-minded about food. As a nation we have become far more adventurous when it comes to trying out new things. So I think the idea of eating something a little bit different, like zebra, is helping make these steaks so popular.”
