Meat products do well at Great Taste Awards

Meat brands cleared up at this year’s Great Taste Awards with a whole host of meat products now eligible to use the ‘Great Taste’ logo.

The Great Taste Awards are widely recognised as the most prestigious food accreditation system for independent producers. The awards receive thousands of entrants each year and judges are presented with just the product – no packaging – and they taste, confer and re-taste before making the decision on whether a product should be a one-, two- or three-star winner. In total more than 12 judges will have tasted and commented on each product.

Some of the meat brands to achieve the highest accolade include: Piper’s Farm, which received three stars for its saddleback pork belly; Martin’s Meats for its Cotswold-reared lamb T-Bone; Northfield Farm with its 21-day aged mutton loin; and William Dyer, which picked up two three-gold-star accolades for its lamb hot pot and steak and stilton pie.

Another pie company that received high acclaim was Jon Thorner’s, which received three gold stars for its steak and ale pie and loin of pork, supplied to online retailer Ocado. The awards judges described the Thorner’s pie as having a “handmade appearance” with a “rich and flavourful gravy”, while the pork loin is reported to be “absolutely delicious – pork at its best”.
