Trading standards bosses have fined food importer Expo Foods Ltd after a pork sausage was discovered to have almost 50% horse meat.

The sausage was found on sale at a Londis store in Dartford, Kent, during test purchases by Kent County Council’s trading standards department in October last year.

Expo Foods, of London, was fined £5,000, after the sausage, imported from Bulgaria and labelled as containing pork sausage meat, was found to have 46% horse meat.

The company pleaded guilty to a charge under the Food Safety Act at Dartford Magistrates Court, and was ordered to pay costs of £2,500.
