Smithfield Awards attract high level of entries

Britain’s best butchers will present their products in Glasgow this week to battle it out for the Q Guild Smithfield Awards.

The Q Guild reported that 54 of its 110 butchers across the UK have entered products into eight categories including: sausages, burgers, ready to eat meat and roasts, bacon and cured products, pies and bakery – both hot and cold – kitchen-ready products, and a new category, ready meals.

Q Guild national chairman and West Yorkshire butcher Brindon Addy said: “The Smithfield Awards are a true and stringent test of the vast variety of products hand-crafted by our members nationwide, who represent the cream of Great British butchery.

“They have an opportunity to win one of the meat industry’s most prized accolades, and this year is one of the biggest entries we have had for quite some time.”

Silver and gold awards will be given out in each category as well as the winners who will receive a diamond award. Just one diamond award winner will be crowned the overall Smithfield Awards supreme champion.

Products will be judged by food and meat industry experts at the City of Glasgow College over two days and the winners will be announced at Butchers’ Hall in Smithfield, London, on Thursday, 13 November, by Matthew Fort, food and drink editor at The Guardian and judge on the Great British Menu.
