Welsh butcher takes on South Africans in sausage competition

A Flintshire butcher has enjoyed some international publicity by entering a South African sausage competition.

Vaughan family butchers from Penyffordd, near Chester, entered the Boer vs Brit sausage competition with its traditional pork sausage. The competition, to discover which country is best at sausage-making, was hosted by South African radio station Jacaranda FM.

The Vaughans went up against Koos Van Dyk, the 2014 Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition winner, and the competition was judged by students from Prue Leith Culinary Academy in Centurion, South Africa.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the South African won the competition, but the experience was good enough for butcher Steve Vaughan who told Meatinfo.co.uk: “When I was first approached by the radio station, I thought it was a wind-up.

“They [Jacaranda FM] found us from our Facebook page and we used this to publicise the event. We have had a lot of interest in the competition from our locals, especially a couple of South African customers who already knew about it before coming into the shop.
