Butchers get involved in Small Business Saturday

Butchers are being urged to take part in Small Business Saturday tomorrow to boost trade and raise awareness of their business before Christmas.

First launched in America in 2010, Small Business Saturday calls itself a “grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign” to celebrate and promote small businesses.

Butchers can get involved in a variety of ways, including in-store promotions and online activity.

One Bathgate butcher’s shop has been promoting the event in-store and using social media to get the message across.
Catherine Stein, owner of David Stein Butchers, told Meatinfo.co.uk: “The campaign highlights the small businesses, the butchers, the independent stores getting crushed by multinationals and it is really important to encourage people to come in the door and spend in the shop.

“The public loves the idea of the independents, but they can’t be surprised when they disappear when they haven’t bothered to shop with us.

“The supermarkets cannot compete with us on quality, but we cannot compete on price, and Small Business Saturday is just another avenue to make people think, ‘put your money into your local butcher’, and we will still be here next year.

The campaign also featured two butchers - Edward’s of Conwy, of Penyyford and Quails Fine Foods in Banbrige, County Down - as part of it’s Small Business 100 that profiled a small business each day for 100 days leading to this Saturday.
