Welsh food companies and organisations, including Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC) – Meat Promotion Wales, are aiming to identify new customers and partners at this year’s Gulfood show in Dubai.

Gulfood, which will be held at the Dubai Trade Centre, is the world’s biggest annual food and hospitality show and is now in its 20th year. It is expected to attract more than 5,000 exhibitors from 120 countries.

Food and Drink Wales said that 15 Welsh producers, supported by the government, will be in attendance under its banner, looking to promote their produce and increase their export market.

HCC’s chief executive Gwyn Howells said the organisation will be looking to build on the existing high demand for Welsh meat in the Middle East.

He added: “Welsh meat is recognised as a quality product across the world and our market, as with many other Welsh food producers, is a global one. So we need to take advantage of opportunities that are presented by trade shows such as Gulfood to meet face-to-face with our existing and potential customers.”

“There is a strong emphasis nowadays on a product’s provenance and its heritage. Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef have been granted Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), meaning it is fully traceable, a key principle for consumers. We will be doing our utmost to promote this and hopefully further increase the value of Welsh food and drink exports,” he explained.

The Food and Drink Wales pavilion at Gulfood is supported by the Welsh Government and deputy minister for farming and food Rebecca Evans said: “Our food and drink sector is one we can rightly be proud of and we need to ensure that everybody knows about it. It is also a very important economic driver – during the last four quarters Welsh food and drink exports were worth over £300 million, up 3.4% on the previous year, a higher increase than the UK figure for the same period.”

Gulfood 2015 will be held in Dubai from 8-12 February.
