Welsh meat body to hold meeting on pig disease

Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) will hold a meeting to increase the industry’s knowledge and awareness of the threat of porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDv).

Pork producers in Wales are being encouraged to attend the meeting on 17 April to study the virus, which is a potential danger to herds in Europe and can lead to high death rates amongst piglets. The disease has severely affected the pig industry in North America and HCC aims to use the meeting to discuss how its spread can be controlled.

Charlie Morris, industry information officer at HCC, said: “Mild forms of PEDv have been seen in Wales in previous years. However, this is a particularly virulent strain of the virus that could have serious consequences if introduced to Wales. Consequently, pig producers need to be vigilant and ensure they can spot the symptoms.”

Welsh government, industry and veterinary experts will be present to share specialist knowledge on PEDv, the approaches taken to prevent the spread of disease in Wales, and how a new outbreak should be controlled. Morris added: “Producers will also be updated on the initiatives currently undertaken by HCC to develop and promote pork produced in Wales.”
