Butchers encouraged to get online to grow sales

Butchers are being urged to embrace the digital revolution to engage with customers more. 

Speaking to Meat Trades Journal at the Q Guild conference and BBQ Finals in Coventry on 31 May, manager Gordon Newlands emphasised the importance of getting online.

“It’s massively important that butchers get online and engage with customers more,” he said. “Utilising social media to its maximum is key. They need to be getting on to Facebook, Twitter and their websites and getting their customers involved. The Q Guild is helping with this by running a consumer competition whereby all members can give flyers out to their customers, which raises awareness of the Guild and of members’ shops.”

Newlands also described the UK butchery industry as “buoyant”. Having visited 83 Q Guild members stores since taking on the position, he said it was “inspiring” to see the hard work taking place in the industry.

“My travels around the country have shown me that there are butchers who are creating innovative products and investing in their businesses. All the shops I visited were busy and there were a lot of refits taking place. It’s buoyant all over the nation, which is a fantastic sight to see.”
