Pupils at Greenwood Academy in Ayrshire have won a competition to design a burger.

The national competition, run by the Scotch Butchers’ Club, part of Quality Meat Scotland, attracted entries from 124 schools. From that, six were shortlisted to work with local butchers to bring their recipes to life.

The winning ‘Clapshot burger’ is made with Specially Selected Pork, and was revealed as overall winner at the QMS stand at the Royal Highland Show on Thursday.

Joint runners-up were Websters High School, Kirriemuir, with Scotch Lamb ‘Tartan Sizzlers’, and Airdrie Academy, North Lanarkshire with a Scotch Beef ‘Crackin’ Wee Burger’.

According to QMS, the main objective of the competition was to encourage youngsters to take an interest in quality, local ingredients and to understand how simple it is to cook tasty, healthy food.
