Indian chef brings a taste of home to The Lake District

A well-known restaurant in the Cumbrian town of Cockermouth has launched a unique ‘signature dish’.  

George Cherian, owner and head chef of the Honest Lawyer, has created the dish that originates from Kerala, the southernmost state of India and also his home town.

After taking ownership of the popular restaurant last year, Cherian took the opportunity to offer something a bit different and personal to help his business stand out from the crowd.

The new dish, Kerala spiced lamb, is made up of fennel and pepper-crusted lamb loin and served with coconut and turmeric cabbage, spicy carrot purée, lamb mince tart, cumin roasted potatoes and cauliflower and cardamom jus. It is reportedly already popular among locals and visitors alike.

“Traditionally, the Honest Lawyer has been well-known for offering good quality and well-priced European cuisine and of course, we will still be offering this to our customers. But I also wanted to put my own stamp on the restaurant,” Cherian said.

“A dish which is very special to me is my way of doing that and it’s a great way to engage with my customers on a personal level. Doing something very different is always risky, but we have already had a tremendous response to the new dish and I’m absolutely delighted.”
